Understanding Medication Refills and When to Reorder

Why Timely Refills Matter

Running out of a medication, even for a day or two, can have serious consequences depending on the drug. Blood pressure medications, antidepressants, and anti-seizure drugs all carry risks when stopped abruptly. Planning your refills in advance is a simple way to avoid unnecessary health risks.

The 7-Day Rule

A good practice is to request a refill when you have about seven days of medication remaining. This gives your pharmacy enough time to process the order, contact your doctor if a new prescription is needed, and handle any insurance issues that might arise.

Automatic Refill Programs

Many pharmacies offer automatic refill programs where your medication is prepared before you run out. Enrollment is usually free and can be done in person, by phone, or through the pharmacy website. This is especially helpful for long-term maintenance medications.

Understanding Refill Limits

Most prescriptions come with a set number of refills. Once those refills are used, you will need a new prescription from your doctor. Keep track of how many refills remain so you can schedule a doctor visit before you run out. Your pharmacy receipt or app usually shows the number of refills left.

Insurance and Prior Authorization

Some medications require prior authorization from your insurance company before they will cover a refill. This process can take several days. If your pharmacy informs you that authorization is needed, contact your doctor right away to start the process.
